«[...] Early in the first lockdown last spring, when people were clinging to the anecdotal environmental positives of a scary situation, there was a lot of talk of the canals of Venice becoming clean and teeming with fish. Unsullied by human activity, the silt had settled and the water magically clarified. Lovely. But terrifying. For more than a millennium, Venice has been there. This beautiful and unique city, full of people and trade and fun and all the consequent filth and crime – a constant. If you could get to it, there it would be. Until lockdown. Among the most deeply unnerving aspects of what we’ve been through is the thought that everything and everywhere was put into an induced coma. London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, restaurants, nightclubs, museums, cinemas, theatres – all silent, except for sporadic pneumatic drilling. Not even lockdown stopped that. Usually when you’re stuck at home, staring at a computer screen or aimlessly watching TV, you do it in the knowledge that...

For example, with someone who no longer is, who exists only in yellowed letters. Or long walks beside a stream, whose depths hold hidden porcelain cups—and the talks about philosophy with a timid student or the postman. A passerby with proud eyes whom you'll never know. Friendship with this world, ever more perfect (if not for the salty smell of blood). The old man sipping coffee in St.-Lazare, who reminds you of someone. Faces flashing by in local trains— the happy faces of travelers headed perhaps for a splendid ball, or a beheading. And friendship with yourself —since after all you don't know who you are. Impossible friendships (2008) Don't allow the lucid moment to dissolve Let the radiant thought last in stillness though the page is almost filled and the flame flickers We haven't risen yet to the level of ourselves Knowledge grows slowly like a wisdom tooth The stature of a man is still notched high up on a white door From far off, the joyful voice of a trumpet and...

Talvez aprendamos a interagir...

On my school notebooks On my desk and on the trees On the sands of snow I write your name On the pages I have read On all the white pages Stone, blood, paper or ash I write your name On the images of gold On the weapons of the warriors On the crown of the king I write your name On the jungle and the desert On the nest and on the brier On the echo of my childhood I write your name On all my scarves of blue On the moist sunlit swamps On the living lake of moonlight I write your name On the fields, on the horizon On the birds’ wings And on the mill of shadows I write your name On each whiff of daybreak On the sea, on the boats On the demented mountaintop I write your name On the froth of the cloud On the sweat of the storm On the dense rain and the flat I write your name On the flickering figures On the bells of colors On the natural truth I write your name On the high paths On the deployed routes On the crowd-thronged square I write your name On the lamp which is lit On the lamp which is...

No one kneads us again out of earth and clay, no one incants our dust. No one. Blessèd art thou, No One. In thy sight would we bloom. In thy spite. A Nothing we were, are now, and ever shall be, blooming: the Nothing-, the No-One's-Rose. With our pistil soul-bright, our stamen heaven-waste, our corona red from the purpleword we sang over, O over the thorn. Paul Celan  - "Psalm" from Selected Poems and Prose, translated by John Felstiner   Ninguém nos molda de novo da terra e do barro, ninguém conjura o pó nosso.

In Goya’s greatest scenes we seem to see                                            the people of the world           exactly at the moment when              they first attained the title of                                                              ‘suffering humanity’              They writhe upon the page                                         in a veritable rage                                             ...

‘We’re all in the same boat’ they say But I would disagree So many different sailing crafts Upon this stormy sea Some sail on ocean liners In comfort, style, and ease Relaxing on their balconies ….Sipping their G & Ts Some speed along in motor boats As if it’s all ok…… With little care for smaller crafts Which may get in their way Some struggle on their battleships Where nothing’s going right Endlessly preparing….. For the next relentless fight Some huddle in their lifeboats… And pray that they’ll be saved Hoping for a calmer sea… And fearing every wave Some drift around upon their rafts…. They barely stay afloat They’re praying for a change of luck… And chance to board a boat Some haven’t found their sea legs yet…. And dread each wave and swell They’re struggling to stay upright And don’t feel very well So whilst you’re on your journey To a safe and calmer port Look out for fellow sailors Who may need some support Could you throw them a life belt? Or a paddle or an oar? Perha...
