Agora, porém, a quem assacar as culpas?

[...] To say these two elements, culture goals and institutional norms, operate jointly is not to say that the ranges of alternative behaviours and aims bear some constant relation to one another. The emphasis upon certain goals may vary independently of the degree of emphasis upon institutional means. There may develop a disproportionate, at times, a virtually exclusive, stress upon the value of specific goals, inolving relatively slight concern with the institutionally appropriate modes of attaining these goals. The limiting case in this direction is reached when the range of alternative procedures is limited only by technical rather than institutional considerations. Any and all devices which promise attainment of the all important goal would be permitted in this hypothetical polar case. This constitutes one type of cultural mal-integration. A second polar type is found in groups where activities originally conceived as instrumental are transmuted into ends in themselves. The origin...

Drink to me only with thine eyes ,      And I will pledge with mine; Or leave a kiss but in the cup,      And I'll not look for wine. The thirst that from the soul doth rise      Doth ask a drink divine; But might I of Jove's nectar sup,      I would not change for thine. I sent thee late a rosy wreath,      Not so much honoring thee As giving it a hope, that there      It could not withered be. But thou thereon didst only breathe,      And sent'st it back to me; Since when it grows, and smells, I swear,      Not of itself, but thee. To Celia Language most shows a man: Speak, that I may see thee. It springs out of the most retired and inmost parts of us, and is the image of the parent of it, the mind. No glass renders a man’s form or likeness so true as his speech. Nay, it is likened to a man; and as we consider feature and composition in a man, so words in language; i...

Outras vezes ens...

Portrait of Marble bust, in Castello di Rocca Sinibalda, Italy, owned by Caresse Crosby, mid 1950s [...] Born Mary Phelps Jacob in 1891, the young Caresse seemed destined for a quiet life, marrying the wealthy Richard Peabody in 1915, having two children and sinking into the anodyne social whirl of upper-class Boston. She flirted with notoriety in 1910 when, frustrated with the constrictions of her whalebone corset, she sewed together two pocket-handkerchiefs and some pink ribbon to create a prototype bra. Based on its instant popularity, she was awarded the first patent for the modern bra, which she eventually sold for a pittance to Warner Brothers Corset Company, who went on to make millions.  Her life was transformed in 1920, with the arrival of a young soldier seven years her junior. This was Harry Crosby, 22-year-old war hero, wealthy scion of a prominent Boston family and nephew of J.P. Morgan. He met Caresse – then known as Polly Peabody – at an Independence Day fair where s...

To modern eyes the sekibō of the Jōmon Period appear to be phallic symbols, although the intentions that lay behind that shape can only be inferred. Within a few centuries, however, the first unquestionably phallic object in Japanese history can be positively identified. It is found on a haniwa はにわ, an example of the clay figures placed within the large earthen tombs called kofun 古墳 from the third century onwards. The ancestors of the present imperial line were buried in these kofun and an important characteristic of the grave goods found within them was the presence of haniwa , which may have had a protective role after death. One excavated in Gunma Prefecture is of a male figure with an erect penis, so for the first time in Japanese history an apparent phallic symbol may be firmly identified as a representation of the male sexual organ by virtue of it being attached to a body. Yet just like the supposedly phallic  sekibō there are no written records for this unique figure, s...

« It is confessed indeed that our state is the most ancient and the greatest, and the most celebrated among all men; and the foundation being thus glorious, on account of what follows these it is still more befitting that we should be honored. For we inhabit this city, not having expelled others, nor having found it deserted, nor collected promiscuously from many nations, but we are of such honorable and genuine birth that we continue for all time possessing this land from which we were born, being sprung from the soil, and being able to call our city by the same names as our nearest relations, for we alone of all the Greeks have a right to call the same—nurse and fatherland and mother. And yet it is right that those who with good reason entertain high thoughts, and who justly dispute the supremacy and who often make mention of their hereditary rights, should prove the origin of their race to be of this nature. The advantages, then, which we possessed from the beginning, and which were...

Paralysis agitans  or Male Parkinson's victim -  Albert Londe in   Nouvelle Iconographie de la Salpètrière t.5 (1892) [...] Parkinson's disease was first medically described as a neurological syndrome by James Parkinson in 1817, though fragments of Parkinsonism can be found in earlier descriptions (Parkinson 1817). As examples, Sylvius de la Boë wrote of rest tremor, and Sauvages described festination ( Sylvius de la Boë 1680 ; Sauvages 1768; Tyler 1992) . Much earlier, traditional Indian texts from approximately 1000 BC and ancient Chinese sources also provide descriptions that suggest Parkinson's disease (Manyam 1990; Zhang et al. 2006) . In succinct and pithy English, Parkinson captured the clinical picture: "Involuntary tremulous motion, with lessened muscular power, in parts not in action and even when supported; with a propensity to bend the trunk forward, and to pass from a walking to a running pace: the senses and intellects being uninjured." Parkins...
